We got Nikolai a "501 Science Project" book for Christmas this year for very good reason. It is full of different experiments in the different sciences that you can do with things you already have at home. He was home sick, too sick to go to school but better enough to not stay in bed, so he got out his book and experimented about gasses and filling up a balloon with a gas created with a combination of chemicals in our kitchen: vinegar and "sodium bicarbonate" which he looked up in the dictionary himself to discover it meant baking soda.

Cool! Does the book have warnings in it, like don't put too much in and seal the bottle or it might explode? Of course, to a young boy, you might as well rename the book "501 ways to make everyday household items explode."
Nikolai, don't read this comment.
Really cool, Nikolai!!! Love, Grandma Diane and Bill
Actually, it does say "Be careful not to inflate the balloon too much - it might burst!" but to me that says "try inflating it until it bursts, it's really cool!"
It's not just about blowing things up though, there are sections for Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Geology/Geography, Physics, and Weather. It's the best book I've ever found for kid science and I've been looking since he was 4.
Nikolai is going to view the contents of the pantry and refrigerator as test tube treats!! LOL
