Nikolai's third grade class celebrated the Olympics by holding their own "mini-
Olympics". They performed in shot put with cotton balls,
javelin with drinking straws, and discus with paper plates. Here Nikolai is counting the area in his traced foot in the "Big-Foot Contest".

Nikolai is testing how strong his left hand is by measuring how much water he can squeeze out of a sponge with one squeeze. They also tested their right hand by seeing how many marbles they could pick up at a time then counted them.

Everybody received a gold medal and wore their olive leaf head bands just like they did in ancient Greece. Everyone was
shocked when their teacher
announced that they had just completed their math lesson for the day. "What! We were doing MATH! I don't remember that!" said Nikolai. They had made guesses of how much their measurements would be on each event, then recorded the actual measurement then recorded the difference... it is the best way to do math that I know! Hands on!!!
